Restructuring of WomenSpace Governing Body

The structure of the WomenSpace Governing Body has been undergoing changes to bring into existence a more participatory and representative governing body. The enlarged Board will now include a representative from each member group, twenty representatives from the community-atlarge, and five representatives elected from the individual membership by the individual members.

The duties of board members include: monthly Board Meetings, fund raising, program planning and policy development, as well as assisting WomenSpace in areas of one's special expertise. In addition, each board member is charged with responsibility to interpret WomenSpace to the community. In effect, each is part of an ongoing outreach effort. Details about the process of becoming part of the Board have been mailed out to the WomenSpace Constituency. If you would like more details or have questions, please call WomenSpace at 961-3100.

The goal is to have a fully reconstitued board by our Open House on June 7th. We would like to introduce the board at that time; therefore, we hope your representative can be present.

The next meeting of the board will be May 17th at 12:00 noon, at WomenSpace in our new jocation, 1258 Euclid Ave. As it now stands, the monthly board meetings will be held alternately at noon and in the evenings to accommodate both scheduling preferences.

A Piece of Herstory

WomenSpace is pleased to announced the Battered Women Hotline is now a service of Women Together. In accordance with our policy of support for member groups, WomenSpace assumed res ponsibility for the Hotline, providing staff time for the training of volunteers, scheduling and general coordination of the service until Women Together received their funding, hired staff, and organized the shelter. The Hotline will operate basically in the same manner as it has in the past our faithful volunteers still answer the calls from their homes 7 nights a week. The line now originates from the Women Together Shelter House. Women calling the old Hotline number will hear a recording instructing them to call the new hotline numbers: 961-4422.

Research Task Force

As a result of the inspiration generated at the WomenSpace Retreat, a Research Task Force has been created. The goal of this group is to encourage, support, and publicize research done on women and issues concerning women. This task force hopes to have a positive impact on women in Cleveland by providing information from a number of sources, such as newspaper and journal articles, research done at local colleges and universities, and research activities of WomenSpace member groups. We are in the process of collecting this information, and it will be on file at WomenSpace for interested individuals.

We will also establish a resource file so that women needing information in specific areas will know who to contact. In addition, we want to include items of interest in monthly newsletters to keep you all informed.

If you have newspaper clippings or articles from journals or magazines you would like to donate to the files, please send them to WomenSpace, c/o Research Task Force. They will be greatly appreciated. If you want to join the task force, leave a message at WomenSpace 961-3100.
